2019 U-23 AFCON: Cameroon crash out after defeat to Egypt

By Beng Emmanuel

Mostafa Mohamed scored a brace as Egypt ruined Cameroon’s chances of reaching their first ever U-23 African Cup of Nations semi final in their maiden participation at the continental football extravaganza.

The Olympic Lions lost 2-1 to the host in Cairo on Thursday and have been eliminated from the competition. They will also miss out from the Tokyo Olympic Games next year.

The Egyptians got the lead through Mostafa Mohamed who becomes the highest goal scorer of the competition with four goals in three games.

Cameroon responded with a prompt equalizer from Ayuk Mbu Eric to take the game on level terms before halftime.

The Pharoahs restored their lead from Mostafa Mohamed’s 51st minute effort which left Cameroon’s keeper Simon Omossola helpless.

Despite exhausting his substitutions, Rigobert Song and boys failed to overturn fortunes to their advantage.

Matters got worst when Ghana’s Black Meteors opened scored against Mali to dethrone Cameroon from the second position in group A.

The Olympic Lions crash out of the U-23 Africans Cup of Nations with four points.

Egypt who remain unbeaten and Ghana qualify from the group A.
