Cameroon’s U-23 Lions squandered their lead and were forced to a 1-1 draw with Ghana in their group A opener of the ongoing CAF U-23 Africa Cup of Nations at the Cairo International Stadium on Friday.
Both sides greatly impressed after putting up a spectacular display in the clash of all-debutants but were unfortunate to share points in their maiden U-23 Africa Cup of Nations stint.
Franck Junior Evina scored an excellent 60th minute freekick to give Cameroon the lead against Ghana’s Black Meteors which sparked excitement among the fans.
Cameroon’s shot stopper Simon Omossola of Coton Sport of Garoua denied the Ghanaian a chance to settle scores on several occasions with his spectacular second half saves.
Ghana were almost undone but bounced back through Habid Mohammed late header from Fuseini Zackaria’s 87th minute shot to level scores.
Cameroon face Mali in their next group A game in Cairo while Ghana clash with host Egypt.
Earlier on, Egypt narrowly edged Mali 1-0 to go top of the group.
