Tonight at the Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium in Yaoundé, the Stallions of Burkina Faso will lock horns with the Teranga Lions of Senegal in an AFCON semi-final clash.
The two nations are still in the hunt for their first-ever crown in the Footballing competition. Senegal and Burkina Faso’s best achievements in the tournament have both been runner-ups.
The Teranga Lions have been more successful in the tournament recently, having been runners-up in 2019, as they lost 0-1 against Algeria.
Their previous exploit was runner-up against Cameroon in the 2002 AFCON final. Going into the game, the Teranga Lions are considered by many football pundits as favorites and have been tipped to have a place in the final of the Africa Cup of Nations.
Despite having a less impressive record at this year’s tournament, the Teranga Lions will be hoping to make back-to-back AFCON final appearances.
With a watertight defensive record in this year’s tournament, the Lions have conceded just 1 goal and scored 6 in 5 games.
Senegal’s coach Alliou Cissé has suggested his team’s effort will be useless without silverware. “This work can only be crowned if this generation wins a trophy… A trophy which we have been running after since 1960.” He said at the prematch press conference.
The Stallions of Burkina Faso will equally come into the game full of confidence. It has been an impressive run for them so far, following their 1-2 opening game defeat against hosts Cameroon.
Burkina Faso will be hoping to better their 2013 runners-up position when they lost to Nigeria.
Stallions Head coach in a prematch press conference has said his team has “set an objective of giving their people a smile… So long as there is life, there is hope… we will not bargain our efforts to make our people happy.”
The game is set to kick-off today at 8 pm Cameroon time, at the Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium in Yaoundé.
