Cameroon’s New Mobile Money Tax Sets off an outcry - #EndMobileMoneyTax

AFCON2021: Cameroonians Turn Attention to nation’s Problems After AFCON Elimination

By A.J

The Indomitable Lions of Cameroon are now you of the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations Tournament, after bowing out to the Pharos of Egypt 1-3 via penalty shootouts.

For over three weeks, Cameroonians had united their voice and acted as a common man in their support of the Indomitable Lions. Nevertheless, with the Lions now eliminated, Cameroonians on social media have turned their attention to the country’s problems before the AFCON.

Social media platform users have revived slogans like the #EndMobileMoneyTax, and the #EndAnglophoneCrisis following Cameroon’s elimination.

According to some social media users, Cameroon will be better off if they channeled the same energy used to support the country during the tournament to other sectors.

Twitter users have called in Cameroonians to put differences aside and work together to make Cameroon better.

To others the competition was a distraction and now they must go back to important matters.

Before the AFCON games Cameroonians had taken to social media with the hashtag #endmobilemoneytax. The aim was to protest an unpopular tax imposed by the government on mobile money transactions. The protest against the tax began gathering momentum a few days before the Africa Cup of Nations. When the tournament began in January, very few continued talking about it.
