Cameroon goalkeeper, Andre Onana played full time and impressed as Ajax of Amsterdam made a winning start in the Eredivisie League after they narrowly edged Sparta Rotterdam 1-0 on Sunday.
The 24-year-old shot stopper made four (4) saves for the Eredivisie title holders and was booked for time wasting four minutes to stoppage time.
Ajax were reduced to 10 men after Nicolas Tagliafico was sent off barely 27 minutes in the game. Nevertheless, the visitors fought hard and open scores shortly before the break as Dusan Tadic assisted Anthony Santos for the game’s lone goal. Despite numerical disadvantages, Ajax struggled to maintain their lead to earn their first victory of the season.
Andre Onana had been out for action due to a minor injury on one of his ankles. He missed out from three friendly games for Ajax during a preseason camp in Austria but made his return shortly after.
The 2016 UEFA Europa League runner-up who joint Ajax in 2015 inspired de Godenzone (sons of gods) to clinch the Eredivisie League last season.
Ajax face RKC Waalwijk in a week’s time at the Johan Cruijff Arena in Amsterdam. It will be their first home fixture this campaign.
