Banga Bindjeme’s delightful over-head kick helped Cameroon collect their first win in the continental tournament as they seek a historic title on home soil.
Solomon Banga Bindjeme scored a sublime overhead kick to help Cameroon to a winning start against Zimbabwe in the opening game of the 2020 African Nations Football Championship.
The 24-year-old defender from Coton Sport of Garoua scored the winner for the host as they capped off an impressive dominant second half display against their Southern African rivals.
Cameroon’s first half didn’t go according to plan as they failed to produce a decent first half to outclass a stubborn Zimbabwe side who successfully banished opposition threats.
The host rarely threatened their group A rivals and look more unlikely to score with most of the few chances created largely off target from several openings.
Their best chance came from Serge Andoulo’s left footed shot which was brilliantly saved by the warriors keeper Ariel Sibanda. They frequently threw away their chances as the game seem destined to be a draw at halftime.
The Intermediate Lions improved after the break and went close to scoring the opener from two solo efforts from Jacques Zoua and Byran Soga. But they later faded back form before they got their breakthrough from Banga Bindjeme.
Thierry Tchuente almost doubled advantage for the Intermediate Lions with a low effort from Serge Andoulo’s cross but his swift attempt was saved the Zimbabwe’s keeper.
Cameroon becomes the fifth successive nation to win the opening match of the African Nations Football Championship. The team led by coach Martin Ndtoungou Mpile have also ended their run of five games without a win.
The Intermediate Lions of Cameroon face Mali in their second outing in group A.
