Record 16-time Cameroon Elite one champions Coton Sport suffered a 1-2 defeat to Orapa United in the first leg of the CAF Confederation Cup Second Preliminary Round at the National Stadium in Botswana.
Marou Souaibou had cancelled out Mbatshi Elias 23rd minute opening goal shortly after the break but Thabang Mosige restored the lead for the host after the hour mark and they held on to grab their first win
Coach Souleymanou Aboubakar handed the club’s three new signings Leonel Mbida, Che Malong and former Panther of Nde skipper David Lee Kokolome their debut. But Coton Sport failed to assert their usual control and were unable to capitalize on a number of chances.
Saturday’s defeat was Coton Sport’s first game at the CAF Inter-club competition since losing to JS Kabylie last June when they reached four.
It is a frustrating start for last season’s CAF Confederation Cup semi-finalist who despite getting a vital away goal must win at all cost in the reverse tie to sail through to the next round.
The return leg is scheduled for October 23 in Garoua. While Coton Sport will seek redemption, nine-year-old Orapa United will be keen to preserve their lead and go past the preliminary round after making their debut in 2017.
