Cameroon beat Congo in thriller to set-up final with Angola

• Cameroon Handball team are through to the final of the Senior Women’s Handball African Cup of Nations for the first time in 17-years.

Host Cameroon edged four-time champions Congo 21-20 in a tightly contested game to reach the final of the Senior Women’s Handball African Cup of Nations for the first time since 2004.

It will be the second time the Cameroon handball national team will play Angola in the final where the Lioness lost 31-20. The Lionesses have featured in two other finals – in 1979 and 1987.

The 2021 World Handball Championship bound produced another emphatic display during the semi-final which enabled them take a significant step to clinch their maiden continental title.

Cameroon’s 23-year-old star Ekoh Karichma was named the player of the match. The 2018 France best young player of the year produced a five-star performance in the thrilling tie.

Cameroon handball Lionesses who are unbeaten in the tournament face defending champions Angola in the final of the African Women’s Handball Championship on Friday June 18 at the Multi-Purpose Sport Complex.


The defending champions are seeking a record extending 15th title and third consecutive trophy after 2016 and 2018. They survived a huge scare against Tunisia in the semi-final on Wednesday and were only able to beat the North Africans 27-23 after regular playing time.

This Thursday, Tunisia takes on Congo to determine who finishes third of the competition.
