Cameroon: Prof. Kamto’s Coronavirus survival initiative to be investigated

MINAT Boss, Paul Atanga Nji has ordered for immediate investigations to be opened on Maurice Kamto’s survival fund aimed at fighting the Coronavirus.

He has asked the Minister of Finance  MOTAZE Louis Paul in a letter to instruct the National Agency for Financial Investigations (ANIF) to immediately open investigations on the initiative as well as freeze all funds already collected under the initiative.

Last week he asked Afriland First Bank to close accounts opened by some political party leaders to raise funds in the fight against COVID-19, saying it was illegal.

Though French Newspapers like “Le Jour” have revealed this morning that no account has been opened at Afriland First Bank for that purpose.

On April 7, Minister Atanga Nji, prohibited

private fundraising initiatives to fight COVID-19 in Cameroon. His decision was based on decree no 85/1131/of 14 August 1985 which talks about the conditions for public generosity in Cameroon.

Some observers have expressed worry over the government – MINAT and MRC’s political leader row.

Barrister Akere Muna in a tweet last week said this is a moment to unite, instead of quarreling about fund collection.
