The fixture was confirmed after Gambia were held to a 1-1 draw by Sierra Leone but advanced to the next round with a 3-1 aggregate score. They won the first leg by 2-nil in Monrovia.
Monday’s result implies that Gambia will now slug it out with 2016 Vice African champions Cameroon, who eliminated the Central African Republic 3-0 on aggregate, for a ticket to next year’s Women’s AFCON finals in Morocco.
The first leg will take place in Cameroon while the Gambia will stage the return leg. The games will run from the 14th to the 23rd February next year.
Cameroon is eyeing their 13th appearance at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations finals. They finished third during their last participation in 2018.
There are ten (10) other second round games scheduled next year across the continent to determine the various nations to qualify for the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations. Morocco will host the competition July 2-23, 2022.
The tournament also doubles as the African qualifiers to the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. The top four (4) teams will qualify for the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, and two more teams will advance to the inter-confederation play-offs.
