Mali narrowly edged Burkina Faso 1-0 in a delightful West African derby to record their first victory in their opening African Nations Championship fixture at the Ahmadou Ahidjou Stadium in Yaoundé.

Siaka Bagayoko headed home from Issaka Samaka corner kick for a late breakthrough as Mali enjoyed a superb start in the competition following the foot step of host Cameroon who beat against Zimbabwe 1-0 in the opener.

Both teams failed to take advantage of opponents mistakes to score and squandered several good chances to change the trajectory of the match leaving both coaches visibly frustrated after a goalless first half.

Mali were made to dig deep for their lead which eventually paid off with Bagayoko’s neat header. Despite the lead, the Eagles continued their show of brilliance to create another goal which met stiff resistance from a buoyant Burkina Faso side.

Mali are second of group A behind current leaders Cameroon who they face on next Wednesday.

The last time a Malian side beat a team from Burkina Faso in an African competition, they topped their group while the Stallions finished buttom of the group.
