Tanzania narrowly edged Namibia 1-0 on Saturday at the Limbe Omnisport Stadium to revive their chances of qualifying for their first ever quarter-finals at the African Nations Football Championship since making their debut in 2009.
Farid Mussa’s second half winner helped Tanzania pick up their first win at the 2020 CHAN after losing to Zambia in their opening game.
Both teams who were in pursuit of their first triumph, settled for a goalless draw at the break with Tanzania creating major standout moments. Despite an impressive ball possession the Taifas only managed four (4) shots on target in twelve (12) attempts.
Namibia faded form in the second half but couldn’t match up with a determined Tanzania side that got their breakthrough five (5) minutes after the half hour mark.
Another defeat for Namibia implies they become the second nation to suffer from an early exit at the 2020 CHAN after Zimbabwe.
The game between Namibia and Tanzania was the first match in a CAF senior men’s tournament to be officiated by an all-female referee team; Lidya Tafesse (Ethiopia), Bernadettar Asimenye (Malawi), and Mimisen Agatha (Nigeria).
Earlier on in group D Spencer Sautu late header from Zachariah Chilongosh’s left cross helped Zambia draw 1-1 with Guinea. Both teams are tied at the top of the log with four points each.
While Tanzania face Guinea during the last group actions next week, Zambia are pitted against Namibia. These games will be played simultaneously at 8pm.
