• Uganda failed to justify pre-match anticipation after a goalless stalemate against Rwanda in the East African derby on Monday.

The Cranes of Uganda were held to a goalless draw by arch-rivals Rwanda in a goalless East African derby on Monday at the Douala Reunification Stadium.
Coach Johnathan Mckinstry’s dream start in the 2020 African Nations Championship with Uganda was ruined by his former employers the Amavubi that he guided to a quarter-final finish at the 2016 CHAN which they (Rwanda) hosted.
It is the second goalless stalemate in the 2020 CHAN after the Niger and Libya clash on Sunday which extends the goal drought in the competition so far. Only four goals have been scored in six games.
Uganda were forced to an early substitution only 16 minutes into the CECAFA derby after Karisa Milton picked up an injury and was replaced by Brian Aheebwa.
Despite the early blow, the Cranes regained momentum and out rightly dominated their group C rivals with possession but it was Rwanda who came closest to scoring when Muhadjiri Halizimana’s rifled an unstoppable drive which came off the woodwork.
Uganda failed to get a second half winner from Tuyisenge Jacques whose header hit the post. It adds to the several chances they had to break the deadlock but couldn’t get through.
Earlier In group C, defending champions Morocco began their title defense with a narrow 1-0 win over debutants Togo to top the group with three points.
Both teams will return to action this Friday January 22nd for match day two of the 2020 CHAN. Rwanda will challenge current group C leaders Morocco while Uganda face Togo same day in the second clash at the Reunification Stadium in Douala.
