Defending African Nations Championship champions Morocco and Guinea are through to the semi-finals of the 2020 African Nations Championship after recording 3-1 and 1-0 wins over Zambia and Rwanda respectively on Sunday.
The Intermediate Atlas Lions of Morocco produced a polished first half scoring three goals as they triumphed over the Chipolopolo’s with relative ease to reach the last four for the second consecutive time after 2018.
Soufiane Rahimi scored the fastest goal at the 2020 CHAN when he opened the scoring during the first minute of play before Mohamed Ali doubled their advantage seven (7) minutes later from a neat finish.
Zambia’s defender Zachariah Chilongoshi was sent off at the 20th minute for a foul after a review from the Video assistant referee (VAR). His absence was immediately felt when Ayoub El Kaabi scored from the spot to help his team take a comfortable first half advantage.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, Zambia managed to pull one back after Amity Shamende served substitute Moses Phiri to score a late goal, although the team could not complete their fight back.
The fourth and final semi-final encounter pitting Guinea and Rwanda produced fireworks. Guinea narrowly edged Rwanda 1-0 to continue their impressive form in the biennial continental tournament.
Both teams were reduced to ten men before the hour mark. Guinea’s Mory Kante was the first to head for an early bath 14 minutes into the tie while Rwanda suffered from the same fate shortly after the break when Olivier Kwitzera was sent off.
Morlaye Sylla ceased the opportunity to put his team out of sight when he scored the winner at the 60th minute from a fantastic free kick. Guinea claimed their second semi-final spot for the first time after 2016.
Morocco and Guinea join host Cameroon and Mali who picked up hard earned qualifications on Saturday in Yaoundé and Douala. The Intermediate Lions came from behind to beat two-time champions the Democratic Republic of Congo 2-1 while the Eagles of Mali beat Congo Republic 5-4 on penalty shoot-outs.
