Conceicao names Cameroon squad for October World Cup Qualifiers against Mozambique

By Beng Emmanuel

Cameroon’s head coach Antonio Conceicao has named a 27-man squad to face Mozambique in a double confrontation during next month’s 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

The Portuguese tactician has included regulars like skipper Vincent Aboubakar, Bayern Munich Star Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, Napoli’s new signing Andre Zambo Anguissa and Young Boys of Moumi Ngamaleu.

Paul George Ntep who had previously missed out from national duties with the Indomitable Lions has been recalled to the squad. Others like John Mary, Ignatius Ganago, Arnaud Djoum, Dawa Joyskim who featured in the list of pre-selected players have been dropped.

There are only two home based players in the squad of 27; Coton Sport goalkeeper Narcisse Nlend Junior and Samuel Junior Kotto of APEJES. Both players helped their teams to reach the final of the Elite one championship to be staged Wednesday September 29 at the Japoma Stadium in Douala.

The Indomitable Lions of Cameroon will face off against Mozambique in the first leg at the Japoma stadium on October 8 with the return leg scheduled three days later in Morocco.

It will be the seventh and eighth confrontation respectively between both nations since 1983. The five time African champions have won 5 of the 6 games against Mozambique recording just one defeat.

Cameroon currently sits second of group F with 3 points. They defeated Malawi 2-0 in Yaoundé on match day one but lost to Ivory Coast 1-2 in a game played on a poor surface in Abidjan. Mozambique on their part have secured just a point from the last two games in the group.

The best nation from group F will qualify for the next and final round of qualifiers where the continent’s five representatives for next year’s 2022 FIFA World Cup finals in Qatar will be known.

Cameroon’s full squad released during Tuesday press conference at the Olembe Sport Complex is made up of four goalkeepers, nine defenders, six midfielders, and eight forwards.
