Coton Sport of Garoua recorded their first win in this season’s CAF Confederation Cup after beating defending champions Renaissance Sportive of Berkane 2-0, on match day two in Garoua on Wednesday afternoon.

It is RS Berkane’s first continental defeat since losing to Daring Club Motema Pembe on January 12th, 2020 on match day four of the CAF confederations Cup last year.

Marou Souaibou opened the scoring barely a minutes after coming in for Felix Djoubairou during the second half before Arnaud Sibiri sealed the win with a superb 72nd minute finish.

Coton Sport started the game with some heap of confidence after losing their first game against Jeunesse Sportive of Kabylie 0-1 in Algeria last week. Coach Souleymanou Aboubakar made several changes to his team with Salomon Banga Bindjeme making his return in the defence alongside Pierre Etame.

RS Berkane were the first to create chances but faced stiff resistance to crack through the host defence. Coton Sport responded via Arnaud Sibiri and Ngueme Araina who made RS Berkane’s defence  restless although they never really seemed to score.  Both teams were forced to settle goalless at the break after a plethora of missed opportunities.

The fifteen time Cameroon League one champions got their breakthrough when super-sub Marou Souaibou break the deadlock from Ngueme Araina’s assist in the second half. The 20-year-old had barely spent a minute on the pitch but deservedlyput his side ahead with a classy low drive.

Desperate to avoid defeat RS Berkane faded form and looked destined to score. But Narcisse Nlend pulled a string of world-class saves to prevent his side from conceding.

Coton Sport who ran out of ideas after taking the lead, scored a second to grab their first group stage win when Fabrice Ebongue set-up 22-year-old midfielder Arnaud Sibiri, who riffled a sumptuous strike to seal victory for his team.

It is Coton Sport first win since making their comeback to the group stage of the CAF Confederation Cup after seven years. They are currently second of group B, and only a point from leaders JS Kabylie. The Algerian top their side came from 2-nil down to draw 2-2 with NAPSA Stars of Zambia.

Coton Sport are away to NAPSA Stars on match day three (3) on April 2. The return leg comes up nine (9) days later in Garoua-Cameroon.
