The head coach of the Cameroon Cycling team Dieudonne Ntep has passed away at age 61 following a fatal accident in Mbankomo, on the Yaounde-Douala highway.
According to FECACYCLISME, the accident occurred around 5 p.m. The former cyclist was on his way to Douala to link up with the rest of national cycling team before his demise.

A statement from the federation said there was a collision with a trailer belonging to a brewery company. The driver who ran away after the tragedy was caught by the gendarmerie. The vehicle and its content were later impounded for investigations.
“The delegation was going to Douala to prepare a trip to Benin where the Cameroon cycling team was invited to take part in the Tour of this country in a few days. Before this trip, the members of the delegation went through Covid 19 test requirement before taking off,” FECACYCLISME’s president Honore Yossi said in a statement.
“The vehicle which transported the delegation to Douala belongs to the federation. It has already transported cyclists and supervisors during competitions for several years without any incident. The driver is experienced and regularly drives on the Yaoundé-Douala stretch of road. He did not report any breakdown after the left Yaoundé,” he added.
“Two of the three survivors of the traffic accident which claimed the life of coach Dieudonné Ntep on May 10, 2021 are the the national team’s mechanic Mr. Weka and the team’s medical doctor, Mr. Nayé. The driver, Mr. Mayi, is also safe. They all sustained minor injuries”.
Following the tragic death of the national cycling coach Dieundonné Ntep as a result of an accident on the Yaoundé-Douala highway, the president of the Cameroon cycling federation will this afternoon at 4pm preside over a crisis meeting at the federation’s headquarters in Yaoundé.
It should be noted that no rider from the national cycling team or from the SNH cycling club was on board the vehicle.
Dieudonne Ntep represented Cameroon at the 1984 Summer Olympics. He has been at the helm of the Cameroon cycling team for more than a decade.
His death comes barely a week to the Tour of Cameroon slated to take place from May 28 to the June 6, 2021.
