Health Minister Congratulates Medics for Covid-19 Free AFCON

Cameroon’s Minister of Public Health Dr. Manaouda Malachie has congratulated health workers following the organization of what he called a “Covid-19 free Africa Cup of Nations Tournament.”

“Congratulations to the Health Soldiers! Thanks to your sustained efforts during this month of Competition, we have enabled our country to bet on a COVID-FREE AFCON…” Minister Manaouda Malachie wrote on his Twitter account.

Cameroon hosted the 33rd edition of the AFCON against all odds following several external pressure for its postponement.

The FIFA President Gianni Infantino particularly had advised for the tournament to be shifted to the winter period.

It was argued by the European Club Association, (ECA) that Cameroon was not well placed to deal with the recently discovered Omicron Variant of the Covid-19.

Some European Clubs also threatened to block their players from attending the AFCON, advancing possible Covid-19 infection as a reason.

Nevertheless, the tournament has now ended, and no major Covid-19 situation was recorded. As expected, though there were few positive cases within teams, but not enough to destabilize the competition.

Dr. Manaouda Malachie has placed the entire credit of this on the medics who made certain all situations were under control.
