Cameroon League one champions PWD of Bamenda suffered a narrow 0-1 defeat to South Africa’s Kaizer Chiefs in their CAF Champions League debut while Coton Sport of Garoua soared in Togo after a convincing 2-0 win over USD of Sokode in the CAF Confederation Cup.
The Abakwa boys have not played continental football in sixteen years and their attempt to make a winning start at the Premier African club competition was drowned after a shock defeat at home.
PWD put up a spirited fight but was not good enough to make impact and found little joy against their South African rivals. The Bamenda based outfit were unable to unlock Kaizer Chief’s solid defence as the eagerly anticipated fixture between both teams with contrasting form failed to produce a goal at the break.
Kaizer Chiefs were deep in trouble upon resumption with their Cameroonian opponents multiplying glaring chances for the opener. But the host also had their moments which met a stiff resistance from PWD’s keeper Hashou Kerrido.
Although they managed to crush offensive pressures from Kaizer chiefs, centre back Erick Mathoho took advantage of an out-of –focus defence to slot a late winner for the visitors.
The host fought hard to level scores and got a real opening to net the equalizer from a last ditch penalty but Derrick Burinyuy’s shot was punched out by Bafana Bafana keeper Itumedang Khume.
PWD must score at least twice without conceding during the return leg encounter in South Africa on November 4. Both PWD and Kaizer Chiefs have never reached the group stages of the CAF Champions League. They are three games away from breaking the duck.
The winner of the first round preliminary will face Angolan giants Premeiro De Agosto.
Coton Sport soars in Togo

Marou Souaibou opened the scoring for the visitors while Guime Araina sealed the win to grab a deserved first leg advantage.
The fifteen time champions are poised to replicate their scintillating form when they host Unisport de Sokode at the Roumde Adjia Stadium in Gaoua on November 6th, 2020.
