Sofiane Bufal scored a late winner as Morocco beat Ghana 1-0 at the Ahmadou Ahidjou Stadium to grab their first three points of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.
The 28-year-old Angers midfielder drilled home the winner from the inside of the area eight minutes to stoppage time after a loose ball from Ghana’s defence came invitingly to his path.
It was a tense football game between both teams regarded as favourites of their group with neither side unable to break the deadlock before Bufal’s 83nd minute winner.
Ghana-who last won the Afcon in 1972-created chances through Jordan Ayew and Joseph Paintsil. But their best chance came from Kamal Sulemana whose perfectly curled shot was saved by Yassine Bounou. Morocco will certainly have regrets of not making use of their chances but surely feel relieved after claiming their first win.
The Atlas Lions join host Cameroon, Cape Verde, Senegal, and Guinea to win their opening games of the 24-nations tournament which started on Sunday. The 1976 champions take on Comoros in their second game on January 14.
