“The ability of journalists to report freely on matters of public interest is a crucial indicator of Democracy,” British High Commissioner to Cameroon

The British High Commissioner to Cameroon Dr. Christian Dennys McClure has highlighted the importance of press freedom in a democracy.

He was speaking at the maiden meeting of the Media Freedom Coalition Diplomatic Network, MFCDN in Yaoundé, Cameroon on September 28, 2021.

“The ability of journalists to report freely on matters of public interest is a crucial indicator of Democracy,” Dr. Christian Dennys McClure said.

He added that “when media Freedom is restricted, these vital functions breakdown impacting on decision making for leaders and citizens alike.


The MFCDN meeting was co-hosted by Canada and the United Kingdom.

The Canadian High Commissioner to Cameroon Richard Bale on his part stressed on the importance of supporting press freedom as a nation.

“It is critical in all countries to support the freedom and independence of journalists ,” he said. 

“This is an essential strand in the complex fibre of democracy, and the 47 member countries of the Media Freedom Coalition – including those from Africa – have committed to work to these ends,” he added. 

The Media Freedom Coalition was formed in 2019 at the Global Conference for Media Freedom. It is a partnership for countries working together to advocate for media freedom and safety of Journalists, now having over 47 members.

The MFCDN is a platform for the coordination of joint diplomatic actions to direct the spotlight on media Freedom.
