The Under-20 women’s national team of Morocco came from behind to beat Cameroon Under-20 selection 2-1 in an enthralling return leg international friendly game at the Ahmadou Ahidjou Stadium on Thursday.
El Basstali Zoubida cancelled Ndome Elise 15th minute opener before Mahy Kawtar completed the comeback after converting from the penalty spot barely five minutes to stoppage time.
Morocco moved into the tie with memories of the 2-0 defeat suffered during the first leg four days ago. They showed a lot of organization and resilience in their game but trailed only after 15 minute from a goalkeeping blunder. Ndome Elise calmly tapped-in the opener after Chaouni Chaimae failed to keep out Ngah Manga’s disturbing cross from the right.
The Under-20 Lionesses had several chances to double their advantage but they were wasteful in their finishes. Chaimae made a string of great saves to prevent Lamine Mana and Toko Megane who got the better of the chances.
Being unable to crack past the Cameroon defence, Morocco resolved to long range efforts. El Basstali Zoubida made a first attempt on target but needed something extra to beat an alert Bihina Michaely. Mahy Kawtar brilliantly played in Mssalfyam Suarez Sora whose left footed efforts from a tight angle went straight at the keeper.
But the Moroccan team led by Patrick Cordoba produced a superb display in the second half. They dominated in the early minutes and created several goal scoring chances. Cameroon on their part created little opportunities and rather looked more eager to protect their lead.
However, at the 65th, minute Morocco levelled scores through El Basstali Zoubida. She rose highest to head home a poorly cleared free-kick beyond the Cameroonian defence.
The North Africans doubled tally with five minutes left from the spot. Mahy Kawtar sent Onomo Christ Emilienne-who had come in for Bihina- to the wrong side for the winner. The Moroccan went wild with excitement when the final whistle was blown.
Cameroon and Morocco are both gearing up for the upcoming Under-20 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. They will continue preparations ahead of the upcoming qualifiers.
