Cameroon narrowly edged Uganda 1-0 at the Olympic Stadium in NouakChott to regain the lead in group A after two successive victories and become the first nation to reach the quarter-final of the on-going Under-20 African Cup of Nations in Mauritania.
Sunday Jang Junior scored a first half header from Saidou Alioum’s assist two minutes after the half hour mark to hand the central African Nation a hard fought win. It is the second goal for the teenage forward who scored the team’s only winner in their first game.
Cameroon-who beat host Mauritania in the tournament opening game last Sunday 1-0, endured a mixed start in the game with their rivals Uganda being the more dominant side but they showed great quality in the tie to emerge victorious.
Despite dominating in the early stages and also in some parts of the game, the Hippos failed to unlock Cameroon’s defense that hasn’t conceded since the start of the competition.
It was rather the Lions who produced a great first half display. The Under-20 men’s team took things much seriously as they struggled to produce the right methods to suppress their rivals. This later enabled them get their breakthrough when Sunday Jang headed in from a beautiful follow-up header which was later deflected in the nets at the 32nd minute.
Any attempt from Uganda to fight back for a point and probably an eventual victory were futile as they were condemned to their first defeat in the tournament after an emphatic 2-0 win over Mozambique In their opening match.
The win implies becomes the first nation to reach the knock-out stage of the continental youth tournament with a game to spare. Cameroon will face Mozambique in their final group game.
