Unfazed Separatists Attack Buea Despite Heavy AFCON Security

By Augustine Nyuykongi

The town of Buea experienced a gun attack from Separatists at the Muea village on Wednesday morning.

Buea which is one of the main hosts of the ongoing AFCON tournament in Cameroon was hit by several gunshots early today morning.

These gunshots according to social media testimonies, came at a time when the Gambian National team was carrying out their training session at the Molyko Omnisport Stadium, a few kilometers away.

The presence of the Separatists led to retaliation from the military, who fought back with counter gunshots to repel them away from the town. The crisscrossing of bullets, unfortunately, hit a lawyer, Barrister Bah Ivo.

The aftermath of the bullet exchange this morning has been massive arrests by the military in the Muea and Liongo neighborhoods of Buea. Residents say even persons with National Identity Cards as well as farmers have been carted off in Military vehicles.

In December 2021 separatist fighters warned CAF and the Cameroonian Government that they were going to do “whatever it takes to disrupt the hosting of the AFCON in the South West Region.”

Warning letters had also been addressed to players warning them not to come to the South West Region. Letters warned they may be caught in the middle of an eventual confrontation with Cameroonian forces.

The first official game of the AFCON will also be played at the Limbe Omnisport Stadium today, and there are opinions that today’s attack may be a warning signal to the organizers.
